THE OPEN LETTER
TO THE NORWEGIAN NOBEL COMMITTEE
From "GOBUSTAN" – ASSOCIATION of AZERBAIJANI ACADEMICS (AAAS)
in the Kingdom of Sweden
20.01.2025
On January 19, 2025, more than 100 participants, members of “GOBUSTAN – Association of Azerbaijani Academics in Sweden” (AAAS), and the Azerbaijani public activists, family members of the January 20 martyrs, and January 20 veterans who attended the ZOOM conference organized by the “GOBUSTAN AAAS” adopted a RESOLUTION as the result of the conference. This resolution is addressed to the chairman and members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee in the following:
Honored Chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, Mr. Jørgen Watne Frydnes and honored members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee - Mr. Asle Toje, Ms. Anne Enger, Ms. Kristin Clemet, Ms. Gry Larsen!
We - the members of “Gobustan” - Association of Azerbaijani Academics in Sweden - together with the family members of the January 20 martyrs, Azerbaijani social activists living in different countries of the world, and January 20 veterans who participated in the public conference we held on January 19, 2025, would like to present to you our RESOLUTION on the awarding of the NOBEL PEACE PRIZE to the General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union MIKHAIL GORBACHEV by the Norwegian Nobel Committee in October 1990.
We consider the fact that Mikhail Gorbachev still bears the title of Nobel Peace Prize laureate to be the greatest injustice in the history of this prize and in the history of mankind, as well as disrespect for the Azerbaijani people, and a black spot in history! We consider the deprivation of Mikhail Gorbachev from the Nobel Peace Prize a necessary step!
By depriving Mikhail Gorbachev of the Nobel Peace Prize, the Nobel Committee would have belatedly cleansed this black spot and eliminated the injustice committed against the Azerbaijani people. Your decision to deprive Mikhail Gorbachev of his award would have strengthened the world community's faith in justice and the moral authority of the Nobel Peace Prize. This is sorely needed!
It is with great pain that we announce that the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to Mikhail Gorbachev, whose hands were soaked in the blood of the Azerbaijani people, by the Norwegian Nobel Committee after the January 20, 1990 massacre is as painful for us as the sorrow of January 20. However, for many years, the Azerbaijani public has not lost faith that this injustice will one day be eliminated.
The Azerbaijani people commemorate the anniversary of the mass murder of a total of 170 people and 800 seriously injured on the night of January 19-20, 1990, as a result of the deployment of Soviet troops to Baku and several regions of Azerbaijan, the firing of heavy equipment and various types of weapons on the civilian population, with the same sadness as every year, cursing the murderer Mikhail Gorbachev and expressing deep hatred for the perpetrators of this tragedy. It is a known and undeniable fact that Mikhail Gorbachev personally gave the order to deploy troops to Baku and against the civilian population! He bears direct responsibility for the mass murders! The bloody trail of this crime is indelible.
There are sufficient legal grounds for bringing the criminals who committed the January 20 tragedy to justice. The January 20, 1990 Massacre is, first of all, a violation of the requirements of the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and other international legal conventions! This massacre is a crime against humanity, during which peaceful people were killed, injured, kidnapped and tortured. A historical crime was committed against the entire people!
All investigations give us reason to call the January 20 massacre a pre-planned state crime to stifle the struggle for freedom and independence of the Azerbaijani people, who protested against the unjust policy of the USSR!
We hope that the Nobel Peace Committee will not turn a blind eye to the insult to Nobel values, and that you will restore historical justice by signing a decision to deprive Mikhail Gorbachev, who has earned the deep hatred of the Azerbaijani people, as well as other peoples of the former Soviet Union, of the Nobel Peace Prize.
Best regards,
